Thailand and Manipur remained as independent
states after the British occupied the whole of Burma, now Myanmar. Since then, the Western imperialists (Britain) adopted a strategy to grip
the region in a bid to claim ownership over its rich petroleum and mineral resources by developing a major road to connect Burma and China with India via Manipur.
For this purpose, the British conquered Manipur to construct a railway line connecting India and Burma using Manipur, wrote The New York Times in its April 23, 1891 issue.
“The Khongjom War was the most serious calamity that befallen the British Army in India since the battle of Malwa,” wrote The London
Mail, Australian daily Brisbane Courier and other newspapers in New Zealand wrote on May 5,
1891 that the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891 was the most important war ever fought by the British after the Afghan War, The New York Times also wrote that the Khongjom War was the most important war
against the British power, New Zealand newspaper Thames Star wrote in its May 28,
1891 issue, “The Manipur disaster has created a painful sensation in England.”
